White Noise
“Hello, Is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me. Is there anybody home?”
Do you ever wake up and say this to the person you see in the mirror? I know I have.
The above lyrics, from Pink Floyd’s song “Comfortably Numb”, seems to fit with the areas of discontentment within ourselves.
Over time the busyness of life can turn life into white noise. The static comes on slowly. You start to tune out little things. Like the advice you have heard over 1,000 times or your mom’s nagging that you need more rest. Or even your friends telling you you work too much. You tune it all our until one day you’re staring at a soundless and picture-less black and white speckle box; called your life.
It’s hard to pull yourself out of tuning things out and change the channel of your life. While you long to go from black and white to color, how do you begin to do that if you’re burned out and exhausted? Below are some ways to overcome the white noise
No Remote: Get up and change the channel. Don’t use the remote. Don’t wait for someone else to change the channel on your life. Don’t think about this for more that 2 seconds. Chose today to see color!
Offense: The best defense is a good offense. Instead of waiting until you’re sucked into the white noise create experiences that add color to your life. Hang out with those who live their lives out loud. Call people back. Say “yes” to doing something fun.
Introspection: Although white noise can make you comfortably numb it is also a barrier to your self discovery process. Take a leap of faith, in yourself, and listen to your own thoughts. What is your heart yearning to do? What do you think about what you’re thinking about? Don’t be afraid to be alone with your thoughts; you may discover that you’re a lot for colorful than you give yourself credit for.
See: Take a day and spend the time to really see. See the colors in nature. See others’ hearts. See yourself as the wonderful person God made. Observe all of the colors of life. You will see what you seek. If you seek white noise; you seek to shrink back and let work engulf the beauty of life. Chose to seek out and see color.
Elevate: Sometimes from our vantage point we see our lives is a skewed perspective. To see the big picture you need to step back and elevate your perspective. You can do this by receiving positive comments that people tell you. You can try treating yourself like a best friend. Be kind to yourself.
How do you plan to see more color in your life this week?
