Why do you accept that things are good enough, instead of believing that God wants more for you? Instead of believing in God’s goodness?  It’s easy to do. You may feel greedy or ungrateful if you ask God to fulfill His promises to you. But like a good father you can trust that He will keep His word.

I struggled with this when I was planning a getaway weekend with a girlfriend. I picked out a super cute Airbnb, but it was in a bad area of town. I talked myself into staying there thinking things like: “I shouldn’t be so picky,” “God will protect us,” and “It’s not that bad.”  But in all this musing, I didn’t stop long enough to hear what God had to say through prayer or through His word.

Then one night I showed my husband the aerial view of the home. As he looked at the windowless cars next to the house, he turned to look at me and said, “You’re joking right?” Right then, I canceled the reservation and made a new one. As soon as I did, I had peace in my spirit.

This was meant to be a great weekend with a dear friend. Looking back why wouldn’t God want to bless His kids? I was the problem. I didn’t have enough faith in God’s goodness. I stepped back into a childhood belief I thought I had squashed, that God is an angry God. Maybe that’s how you see God too on some days. God’s word shows His great love, mercy, and protection. These verses are just a small sampling of how God displays His goodness and how He feels about us.

  1. God says in Jeremiah 29:11:“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

  1. Read Psalm 91 in its entirety. This entire passage is about God’s protection over you.

  1. God calls you His treasured possession in Deuteronomy 7:6. “For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.”

As you read these scriptures let them soak into your soul. God has good plans for you. He protects you because you are His treasured possession. These are just a few reminders of His promises to you which the bible is stock full of. Next time you are faced with a situation where you think that things are good enough,  pray and read God’s word. He is willing to bless you beyond what you expect and ask for. You need only believe in His faithfulness and goodness.

Questions for reflection:

  1. When was the last time you thought God was angry with you? How did this impact your faith in His faithfulness and goodness?
  2. What are some ways in which God has displayed His goodness to you?
  3. How can you better recognize and pay attention to God’s goodness?
