The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as:

“Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity, and leadership.”

Before I became a Christian Life Coach, I embodied ICF’s definition of coaching*. Back then my Business Coaching Business was not much different then everyone else’s. While I was a Christian, I separated my Christian beliefs from my profession. I grew up in corporate America and honestly didn’t know any other way.

Then God put the brakes on that. I literally could not conduct any part of my coaching business without not only including Him, but making Him my only focus.

That changed everything.

He changed the way I coach to who I give the credit to for my success. Having been a secular Business Coach, I have a unique perspective on the ways that Christian Life Coaching is different.

Here are 7 differences I see in my own coaching practice.

  1. The Holy Spirit Guides the Sessions: Of all the things that changed, this is the most important. My main goal as a Christian Life Coach, is to be in an obedient relationship with the Holy Spirit so that I have ears to hear Him. This allows us to receive His guidance before, during, and after our sessions. This is why I am able to tailor my coaching services to you.

“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” – Galatians 5:25

  1. Purpose: The purpose of a Christian Life Coaching is to equip you for God’s calling in your life and help you to rely on Him as you live that calling. It is only then that you will reach your God-given dreams. This purpose is something we come back to when you get discouraged or begin to doubt.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10

  1. Focus: In Christian Coaching, God’s Kingdom and things that are eternal are what are most important. In these sessions, there is always a check-in to your heart’s motivations. These motivations are the source of your thoughts and actions. I help you to stay on His course for your life.

“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” – 2 Corinthians 4

  1. God’s Word: God offers practical teachings in His Word for every situation you will face in your life. His Word is the anchor for your dream journey. It will help you stay focused on Him and learn how to be more like Christ. I use God’s Word often in our sessions and in your homework assignments.

“All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” – 2 Timothy 3

  1. Prayer: We pray for your needs each step of the journey. Partnership with the Holy Spirit is critical and that can only happen if we talk to Him. We open and close each session in prayer.

“Pray continually” – 1 Thessalonians 5:17

  1. Identify: One of the things you face, in any kind of coaching, is fear and doubt. In Christian Life Coaching, I help you to identify the lies from the enemy. Many of these lies are rooted in believing what the enemy says about you and not what God says about you. I remind you on who you are in Christ and who’s Spirit you have in you to defeat any stronghold that gets in your way.

“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave them the right to become children of God.” John 1:12

  1. Heart Change: All types of coaching have a large accountability piece. But as a Christian Coach, I am not working alone. The Holy Spirit is showing you areas in your life where He is renewing your mind. He will not, nor will I, give you more to process than you can handle.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” – Romans 12:2
